What is it like seeing some other person for the very first time?
When I was a little kid, my dad took me to see a motorcycle race at a fairground near where we lived.
While viewing the spectacle, my eyes were drawn to another spectator, the sight of which made my blood run cold … literally cold!
The other person had no eye lids and no lips and his skin was this awful pinkish color and seemed to be scaly.
My dad informed me that this person had been burned very badly over most of his body during World War 2 when he was part of a tank crew that took a direct hit which set the tank on fire.
In later years, I actually became friends with this guy. He was very amenable to having friends because most people shunned him.
When I first set eyes on my wife of 33 years, the first thing I felt was like my eyeballs were going to fall out of my head because I thought she was gorgeous. When she returned my gaze, I thought, “I am going to have to take a cold shower right now … without delay!”
When my gaze met the eyes of my little dog, “Tag,” I felt a warmth that said to me, “This is a forever love affair.” My dog lived to be 21 years old. We kind of grew up together.
When a preying mantis that I wanted to make a pet out of and I first saw each other, there was a moment of fright …. I think I scared the mantis and I know that he kind of scared me too. The same thing happened with the little bat that I wanted to befriend. However, I got over the bat and we actually did become friends. He loved to hang upside down from my shirt collar. One day he just flew away.
Eye contact affects everybody a little differently I would say.
