This And That (154)

PLANT BASED BURGERS

Hamburger, Burger, Barbeque, Bbq, Beef

First of all, I have to tell you that I have tried a number of these so-called “Plant-Based Burgers and I am not fond of any of them because when I want a burger, I want real meat. I have always eaten real meat and I am always suspicious of anything that tries to be something Nature never intended for it to be.

But my personal tastes do not dictate dietary preferences for the rest of humanity and so I say “If there are people out there who prefer plant-based burgers then, by all means, have at it!”

My concerns about the current rash of plant-based foods is that since they are commercially processed, somewhere down the road, perhaps a few years into the future, we might come to find out that they are not as good for us as we might have been led to think they are. But that is just me talking and what I am saying might not have a thing to do with reality at all. (See how honest I can be? I have no agenda here, folks.)

Nope! For my money, give me old-fashioned, honest-to-goodness prime grade beef every time. I have been eating real food for 83 years now and none of it has seemed to do me any harm at all. Just my opinion, folks, just my personal opinion like everything else written on this blog.

Now that I expressed my negativity toward commercially-processed plant-based foods, let me make a few suggestions on how I believe the taste and appeal of a plant-based hamburger sandwich might be improved for some folks.

First of all, I think I would cover the burger with either gravy or some kind of nice sauce. I have made up my own burger sauce that seems to go well and here is the recipe for that for those of you who are interested:

MY HAMBURGER SAUCE RECIPE

Equal parts of (1) Yellow Mustard, (2) Ketchup, (3) Mayonnaise with a dash of balsamic vinegar salad dressing. You might want to follow my example and add a pinch of brown sugar to the sauce. (Mix it up very well before slathering it onto your burgers.)

This sauce recipe seems almost to simple to be true but I use it all the time and I find it serves the purpose. Some of my friends have even called it “A Magic Hamburger Sauce.) I am not so sure I would go that far.

Lettuce, pickles, cheese and tomatoes might also lend a helping hand to supercharging the taste and appeal of a plant-based hamburger sandwich. One last trick that I have used to good effect on these things is that I have brushed the burger patties with a little bit of Beef Bouillon before cooking them. (I figure that most cooks who are reading this have already thought of the bouillion idea.).

You are welcome, I am sure.

GETTING IT MOVING EARLY

I have been more or less trapped in the house all through this miserable pandemic-laced Winter and now that the nice weather is peeping through the clouds, I have to get off my lazy butt first thing in the morning, every morning when the weather is nice enough to get out …I have to get up, get going, get out and go!

What this usually means for me is to wake up, wash my face, drink my coffee, put on my running shoes and go outside and slog, jog or power walk for at least 30 minutes to an hour. This energizes me, raises my metabolism and makes me feel good about myself for the rest of the day. But that is me. You? You need to consult with your personal physician before adding any kind of exercise — or any changes at all, for that matter, to your ordinary routines. (READ MY DISCLAIMERS AGAIN —RIGHT HERE.)

If you are not into walking, jogging or running, you might consider doing a few calisthenics, using a treadmill, doing some light weight lifting …If nothing else, let me say right now that something as simple as standing in an upright position and squeezing the cheeks of your behind together forcefully and holding each squeeze for the count of ten is a form of exercise. I admit that I have done this on several occasions in elevators, on streets, in offices and at home when I am pressed for time. I have to remind myself that squeezing my own butt cheeks together for the sake of exercise is not sexual assault. So remember .. if you’re going to do it, make sure you limit yourself to doing it to you and not to somebody else. (Am I hilarious or what?). (Consult an attorney if you have further concerns or questions about this one.)

I HAVE TO REMEMBER MY WATER

Being relatively advanced in age now, I have to remember to drink enough water to stay hydrated throughout the day. In my case, that means at least 5 glasses of water throughout the day. Some people require more and some people require less. I find that the 5 glasses does me very well.

Bottle, Mineral Water, Glass, Pour, Pouring

When I drink water, I love to squeeze just a tad of fresh lemon juice into it. I find that flavoring the water helps me to drink it more easily than if I do not flavor it.

One thing that I find important is to drink at least a glass of water before eating a meal. The water seems to help me to eat less food at the meal and keeps my daily caloric consumption down. I need this because I tend to eat a lot and to tip the scales far higher than I wish I did.

BITCOINS COMING TO SOME BANKS SOON

It has been announced that certain United States banks will be allowing their customers to indulge in Bitcoins using their regular bank accounts to make the transactions.

Bitcoin, Blockchain, Currency, Coin, Gold

Bitcoin is, of course, the “Crypto Currency” that is all the rage with very rich individuals and massive business entities because there is reportedly a high rate of return on investments in the crypto currency although there are also some potentially grave risks to indulging in it at the time being …. mostly because of a lot of scams out there. But all this may change very soon so that the regular, everyday person who is not necessarily wealthy will be able to share in the dream often associated with Bitcoin. One bank has reportedly even been working on introducing a brand new kind of account where interest on balances is paid in bitcoin.

Example of how bitcoin can grow in value —-If someone had invested $1,000 into bitcoin just Ten years ago, their $1,000 investment would reportedly be worth a staggering $15.6-million dollars today if that person had held onto their bitcoin.

I am not going to sit here at this keyboard and recommend or suggest that anybody go out and start playing with Bitcoins but I will assure you here and now that if the opportunity presents itself, I will personally participate in my bank’s bitcoin plan if they do, indeed, adopt one.

LET US RELAX FOR A MOMENT OR TWO

  1. I agree. On one hand we’re told we’re eating too much processed food and another ‘health’ brigade thinks we ought to eschew meat. I’d like a bit more up-front honesty from the veggie and vegan brigade about where they think their vitamin B12 supplements come from. (They do know that there are vitamins and suchlike that can only come from meat, don’t they? Not to mention the need to mix their vegetable proteins correctly before the body can actually utilise it as protein?)
I’ll stick with the natural option thanks.

  2. I have tried ‘Quorn burgers’ in the past. With enough relish on them, they are edible. I prefer premium beef in a burger though.
As for Crypto-currency, I will have nothing to do with that.
    Best wishes, Pete.
