I guess we got a new holiday now, “Juneteenth.” I guess this holiday is long overdue in the eyes of some folks but actually .. I have lived for 82 years without it. But I am glad that it is here and I am glad that the people it is for are blessed by it. Since I have been retired for (Ever since 2001) I guess I won’t be getting to take a day off for this holiday.
Took a second long walk today and survived. I guess I am tougher than I thought I was.
Had a 5-ounce hamburger on a brioche bun for lunch today … and some (1/2 cup) potato salad.
It is 1:54 PM now and I am going to take a nap. The weather here is cooler today — pleasantly cool, actually. Reminds me of mornings in Michigan. (Michigan hasn’t sunk into the Great Lakes yet?).
Think I will sneak off into another room and take my blood pressure. I do not know how I got into the habit of taking daily blood pressure readings but I think it is probably a good idea. I need to keep mine under 130 on the systolic and somewhere in the range of 80 on the diastolic. I have been fortunate on that score because my daily is somewhere in the neighborhood of 118/67 — or something like that.
Television is supposed to be a diversion but I find most of it to be either depressing, nerve-wracking or downright indecent. The news is especially jarring and should never be considered as a means to obtaining peace of mind. I believe that news anchors are actually paid according to their ability to rattle people’s nerves. I believe that long term exposure to that sort of stimulus can only be harmful to the observer and besides, why do people watch the news anyway? There is little or nothing that we ordinary people can do about any of the stuff we see on the news anyway except, perhaps, to talk about it over drinks at the local bar. (Or the back fence, as the case may be.)
They are talking about the coming of the new covid-19 variant, the “Delta” variant and they are saying that it is more deadly and dangerous than anything we have seen before … and they are telling us that the vaccines that we got for the regular covid-19 virus are very effective against “Delta” and they are saying that this new variant is spreading at a break-neck speed … but still there are idiots who refuse to get vaccinated … and these are the ones who will be directly responsible for a new surge in the pandemic if it should come. The officials are saying that the new surge is expected to come sometime in July of this year. I do not know why so many people are showing suicidal tendencies in their refusal to do the right thing where vaccinations are concerned.
Like I have already said somewhere, I purchased a new container of whey protein powder the other day because I believe whey adds nutrition to my meals and for me it is a natural appetite suppressant. Being constantly more or less overweight, I appreciate the soothing appetite suppressant qualities of the whey protein. I mix it into smoothies and I put it in my oatmeal every morning. I always eat less at the next meal when I use whey protein concentrate. This might not work for everybody and I would certainly instruct anybody who wants to try it and who has never used it before to talk it over with their personal physician before going ahead.
Since I am more than 80 years old now, I am not wanting to climb ladders much anymore for fear of falling. So I need the gutters on my house cleaned and I am looking for someone that I can trust to do a good job at a reasonable price. It absolutely amazes me how many people there are these days who do not really want to work (at any price) and if you find someone who will work, the price is usually outrageously high. This is one problem that I suspect a lot of senior citizens face. The key, as far as I am concerned, is to get references from anyone who says they will do any kind of work around the house … and then check those references out carefully. There are a lot of cheaters and scam artists out there who always see an elderly person coming.
I AM THINKING
I am thinking that there will be days when I do not have enough stuff to write a blog post about. When that happens, I will have to just write stuff as it occurs to me and send it out to the world wide web when I think there is enough for people to waste their time reading.
SALAD FOR SUPPER
I made an avocado salad for supper. This was served alongside of some really tasty salmon cakes. I love salmon cakes when they are golden crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. But right now I am going to share with you my avocado salad recipe:
You will need to cut up into bite-size pieces and combine the following items:
Spring Mix Salad Greens (Comes in a package from most supermarkets.)
Avocados (at least two medium sized.)
Walnut pieces (Half a cup)
Balsamic Vinegarette salad dressing (To taste)
A light pinch of gourmet coarse sea salt
One tablespoon white sugar
Mix it all together and chill in the refrigerator until time to serve.
Serve each guest 1-1/2 cups (or more as desired) as standard serving.
Let me know how you like it.
See Y’all tomorrow if’n the creek don’t rise.
