That calendar over the telephone on the wall over there seems to have gone mad flipping it’s pages recently. It used to be that a day actually felt like 24 hours and now it feels more like 24 minutes… or even less. What has happened?
My “Grampy” used to tell me that time seems to go faster as we get older and I never believed him because when I was a kid, a day seemed eternal … school days seemed to be a month long each …. as an adult work days seemed even longer than the school days … but now that I am old, just watch the time fly by! OMG, Mildred, it was 6 O’clock in the morning just a few minutes ago and you mean to tell me it is 10 O’clock in the evening right now?
Time is as uncontrollable as body weight. Since I have gotten older it seems like there is nothing I can do that will help me to lose weight short of some catastrophic wasting disease … and I definitely am not looking for one of those!
The doctor has all this standardized dietary advice that is found on charts conveniently geared to a fantasy creature known as “The Average American” and then the doctors try to jam everybody into “Categories” and then they apply their medical advice to the “Categories” according to something they call “Protocols” which is medical double-speak for “What works for one must be applied to all whenever possible.” Medicine seems to have forgotten, these days, how to administer their health care on an individual basis according to individual needs customized to fit individual profiles.
What I just said is the main reason that I always tell whoever will listen, “Become familiar enough with your own body that you can “Cooperate” (Have a say) in the treatments that you receive from the Medical Community.
So what am I talking about here?
I am going to use myself as an example here:
I am an 83-year-old weight lifter and I weigh usually between 230 and 241 pounds of firm muscle with a little normal fat thrown in … as is to be expected. As we age, our middles expand … it is natural …
But my doctor wants to cram me into “The Metropolitan Weight Charts” which is something that a lot of physicians use as their “Guide” in dealing with diet and obesity. According to that chart and my doctor, I am supposed to weigh 186 pounds at the most in order to be healthy. The truth is that if I weighed 186 pounds with my muscle structure, I would be emaciated!
So even though my vitals remain really great …. Blood pressure of 118 over 68, heart rate ranging from 41 to 85 (Resting rate of 69) my doctor and I are constantly wrestling each other over … “You really need to lose some weight, John.”
I have been battling this battle since I was 22 years old and I haven’t won it yet … and I am still here … and I am not in a nursing facility … and I can still walk 4 miles at a relatively fast pace each day the weather permits … and I can still go to a gym and do a respectable workout …. and I have no chronic conditions except for well controlled hypertension …
We are all individuals and we need to be treated as individuals! But don’t count on it! Insist upon it, but don’t count
CHIA SEEDS AND FLAX SEED
I had almost forgotten about what I perceive as the benefits of adding either/or Chia seeds or flaxseeds to my diet. I don’t know exactly what is claimed for these seeds, but as for me, I feel like they help me a lot — I believe they help my digestion … I believe they contribute to my endurance … my sense of well-being. So I put at least Two tablespoons of one or the other of them in my oatmeal every morning. I am not telling you to do that! I am not suggesting that you do that! I never prescribe anything on this site and if you have read my disclaimer you will already know that. But I do like to share the things that work for me to others who might like to hear about what I have to say.
TAKE CARE WITH FRESH EGGS
Here is something I never knew — If you buy your eggs fresh from a farmer or from somebody who has a few chickens and is selling eggs …it is best to wash those fresh eggs under running water before cooking them. I had never heard of doing this so I went looking for answers.
The answer that I found is the answer that convinced me to wash each egg carefully before cooking it. The answer I found is “Fresh eggs often carry salmonella germs from infected chickens.”

That was enough to convince me and now I am a believer!
CHANGED MY BLOG AGAIN
I have been doing this blogging thing for more than 10 years now and I guess I have changed the looks of this blog at least a hundred or more times. Always searching for a “Look” that is sleek, modern and easy to read. So here I am again with a new theme and I can’t even remember the name of the theme but I know that I like it better than anything I have done thus far and I am hoping that you will like it too.
