Urban Nights

There is nothing lonelier than the streets of a city at night.

After all the stores close … after the theaters let out …

The people start to drift away and disappear

And even though you know you are surrounded by thousands of other people hidden away in their little spaces, you sense a lonely desperation …

The elevator music plays softly …. you sit sipping the last bacardi of the evening …

You look out the windows of the piano lounge…

The streets become more deserted by the minute …

You feel tireder now … imagining the soft bed in the air conditioning at the hotel …

A fire truck rushes by the window, siren blasting, lights flashing …

You take another sip of the drink …

Your friend across the table suggests that we go …

Out into the artificial lights of the street lamps …

A cloud of steam erupts from a manhole cover….

The stench of what lies beneath the streets reaches your nostrils …

You climb into the comfort … the cocoon of your automobile…

You sense the bodily warmth of your companion ….

You motion to the driver to proceed …

The low hum of the automobile engine lulls you …

The passing streaks of light from the street lamps and store windows hypnotize you …

From the balcony outside your hotel room you look down on the city …

A few cars now, threading their way … you wonder where they are going …

No pedestrians in view …

The city sleeps …

And very soon …. so do you.
